About UsBlack Powder Teachings offers culturally sensitive workshops to address the issues facing Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal citizens in Calgary and surrounding communities. Drum making and singing instruction, stories and legends, cultural awareness training and team building exercises to both profit and non-profit organizations, are only a few of the programs and services offered. Traditional dancing and singing instruction, Aboriginal crafts, and cultural teachings reconnects both Aboriginal citizens to their cultural background to ensure that personal and cultural pride is restored, and creates opportunities for cultural awareness by non-Aboriginal communities. What Others Say"For someone like me, that likes to sit around and discuss issues and colonialism, it was great. I think the course provided a great opportunity to talk about the distrust, hostility, resignation, etc., that we might come up against when dealing with Aboriginal communities. How do we work to acknowledge this history of colonialism and oppression, and move forward as partners? How can we get people to see beyond the stereotype of the Urban Aboriginal person, to become aware of the enormous strength, resiliency and diversity amongst Aboriginal peoples” (past participant). |
